Presentation of women in much ado about nothing essay

Hero is mirrored — in a similar way to how Beatrice is mirrored in Margaret — in Ursula. Don Pedro is very mild mannered and wise, portraying the gentlemanly aspect of men.

In act 3 scene 1, we see a very different side to Hero than Shakespeare has previously portrayed. Another issue concerning gender is the apparent inequality over sexual relations. The woman involved usually had little or no say over matters, as marriage was more like a business transaction between the suitor and the father.

Shakespeare portrays Leonato as the loving old man but he definitely has his faults in not seeing his own mistakes.

Her silent and submissive nature is what shows her weakness to being controlled by other characters. And yet when in Act 3 scene 1 when Hero, Margaret and Ursula try to gull Beatrice she seems, to a certain extent, to believe them.

It is ironic that it was Claudio that said this earlier in the play and now it has proven true with Benedick rather than with Don Pedro whom he had thought it true earlier. Beatrice repeats this line several times, interrupting Benedick with more of her self pitying rant every time he tries to defend his reasons for objecting to killing Claudio.

The expectancy of women of this time was to get married and have children, and so by portraying such a passionate disdain towards the subject through Beatrice, Shakespeare challenges the stereotypical role of a woman. Women were not allowed to fight their own battles while men had to be the protectors in the relationship and defend women on their behalf.

Hero is a character that at first glance seems insignificant in the sense that she is rarely given opinions or a chance to speak.

There is a mutual respect for each other, probably due to the feats that Don Pedro has done and, the promise that Don Pedro can see in Claudio.

He also defends his daughter against his friends with whom he has been very hospitable with which shows his utter devotion to her. The character of Hero can be interpreted in one of two ways. We can write a custom essay According to Your Specific Requirements.

Another moment in which Beatrice shows compassion is when Benedick proposes his love to her, and her immediate reaction is to tell him to kill Claudio for what he has done to her cousin, Hero.

The issue of father and daughter relationships is raised in the play. Each of the female characters in this play represents a different role of a 16th century woman.

This could show that Claudio is as paranoid as Don John over the fidelity of women because he does not question if, and why, Hero would do something like this.

We see from his outburst here that he loves Hero deeply and feels so hurt by what he saw, that his only reaction can be uncontrollable rage.
