From the opening credits ofwhen we see her singing along with the radio to "All By Myself" in her flannel pajamas, we know that she is destined to find someone who loves her as much as we do already, and that we will have a lot of fun on the way there. On the other hand, there is a measure of sympathy for Jones.
The film and novel have a less-than-honorable Bridget jones diary movie review love interest who turns the female against Darcy at first before they discover the truth, too. Firthwho played Darcy in the television miniseries Pride and Prejudiceappears as this Mr.
In this way it differs from something like "Timecode", where either liking the film OR having a high opinion of it is something to be embarrassed about.
This type of sardonic commenting gives the film its character. The most prevalent theme of the film seems to be the idea of unreliable first impressions when it comes to love. What similarities are there between the two stories? The film has its share of savory occasions, awkward comedy, and wistful glancing that make up the pillars of any respectable romantic comedy.
Further, a lot of humor is added in Jones narrating parts of her diary throughout the film.
Sign in to vote. The film also does well in showing how Jones grows from being a desperate singleton who seems like she could fall for anyone to an independent woman capable of selecting the better option.
Colin Firth is magical! It succeeds in delivering the point when Jones ultimately rejects Cleaver for the more mature, principled Darcy, even if he seemed reprehensible at first.
And there is the stiff and disapproving childhood neighbor, Mark Darcy Colin Firthnow a divorced barrister, who always seems to be there just as Bridget encounters disaster. There is showing up for a "tarts and vicars" party in a Playboy bunny outfit because no one told her that they had decided not to have the guests wear costumes after all.
But surely even the people who think "Dumbo" is a bad film must still manage to like it. The most obvious reference is in the name Darcy. But first, she has to get through the gorgeous cad stage -- having an affair with her workaholic, alcoholic, self-centered, needy, but witty and undeniably extremely gorgeous boss, Daniel Hugh Grant.
This also gives depth to the plot as her writing is full of cynicism about her own life and the people she encounters. He plays the part of Daniel, "a disaster with a posh voice and a terrible character," with such relish that viewers enjoy seeing Bridget fall for him almost as much as they enjoy seeing her tell him off.
Like his namesake in Pride and Prejudice, though, Darcy turns out to have more tenderness and humor than one would think. Yet, in the end, all these elements are neither memorable nor poignant enough to take it to the heights of passion the filmmakers were reaching for.

I never read the book. And something similar applies to, say, "Citizen Kane". In order to understand what someone like Darcy has to offer? This is an amiable, well-written and fresh romantic comedy with, for ONCE, an attractive female protagonist.
Was this review helpful? I can see why one might mistakenly have a low opinion of "Dumbo": What does someone have to know about herself in order to turn down a Daniel? The plot highlights this theme in a twofold way: Still, the movie is certainly funny.
If you wish to have some fun and also like to dream a little bit, this is definitely the movie for you. Nevertheless, the audience might find themselves egged on for too long before reaching an obvious conclusion.
Employing such elements as gawky conversations, irreverent parents, and a sarcastic lead character, the film has plenty at its disposal to make the story entertaining, which it does fairly well.
